Hints of Spring

We’re starting to see hints of spring on the farm. There is a lot of standing water from the recent rain storms, just as we cleared out from the snow melt. Makes it hard to work off the driveways but we’re getting things done and we’re ready for a great season.

We’re starting a lot of new things this year;

Our family Jersey cow is ready to give birth in the next few weeks and we are excited to get a taste of our very own fresh milk. Maple sap has been boiling every nice day we can get it going. It’s always the most rewarding to make sweet things on the farm.

Sugar is so hard to come by, it makes it taste more special. On that note we’re happy to be bringing bees back to the farm. We’re signed up for a bee keeping course and have a deposit in on two new nucs. We’re hosted a lot of bees in the past but this is the first time we will be doing it all on our own.

We’re also upping the quantity of chickens we process this year, making plans and building out the infrastructure for a few sets of broilers in addition to replacing our main flock of egg birds.

The milk room is almost done, Bill cut the floor and sink drain line in on the weekend, he just needs to get the supply side sorted our then repour the concrete and get the flooring in. A good thorough clean up and we’ll be ready to move equipment in and start milking.

There’s no shortage of things to do- the mist pressing project is getting some more space cleaned out in the barn for the calf and I need to start to work on the outdoor shelter and fencing for the cattle.

Things are starting to get a little easier, the light at the end of the tunnel is near, on the cow front anyways! Next up is the garden!!
